In search of a toddy shop where you can take your family to and relish superb food? Come to Tharavadu Restaurant at Kavanattinkara, Kumarakom on any day of the week between 9 am to 10 pm. However, the best time to visit this restaurant is during the lunch hours. Varal Meen Curry, Crab Roast, Podimeen Fry, and Tharavu Curry are some of the dishes you must try from here.
Ever since its inception in the year 1979, Tharavadu Restaurant has attracted tourists and travellers who come to Kumarakam with its Kerala food items. After undergoing some changes down the years, the restaurant now sets a perfect example for every other toddy shop in Kerala.
Located at Kavanattinkara on Kottayam – Cherthala Road that pass through Kumarakom, you can spot this restaurant right after KTDC and Kavanattinkara Bridge. The restaurant is placed on a pretty spacious compound where good parking space is available.
‘Varal Meen Curry’ is a specially made fish curry available here. The recipe is customized to you’re your satisfaction. This fresh water fish is cooked perfectly with basic masala that is altered according to customer’s request. You can even choose whether you want the dish to be spicy or not. ‘Crab Roast’ from this restaurant is high on the spice meter. It has thick gravy prepared using local recipes. This is a great dish to try with the tapioca preparation served here.
‘Podimeen Fry’ is the dish most preferred along with afternoon meals. The fish is so crisply fried that it becomes very brittle and is mostly available as crumbs. The reasonable price is the reason for the dish being a favourite item with the meals. ‘Tharavu Curry’ is served in very little oily gravy. The addition of coconut milk makes this dish less spicy and the taste more enjoyable.
Tharavadu Restaurant has different ambiences set to please different customer needs. There is an air conditioned dining area, roof top dining space, huts etc. The place is very neatly maintained and is suitable for family customers too.
The peak time here is during the afternoon lunch hours. Though the waiters at this toddy shop cum family restaurant have uniforms, they share an informal but cordial relation with the customers. Overall, Tharavadu Restaurant is inciting both as a cool hangout destination as well as for enjoying a ‘nadan’ Kerala food experience.
