A picturesque location offering a mesmerizing view of the Fort Kochi harbour, Pepper House Café is indeed a treat in all sense. Functioning from one of the heritage buildings, the café is located at Calvathy Road near the Customs Police’s boat jetty. This place is open from 9 am to 7 pm on all days of the week. Alleppey Fish Curry, Cappuccino, Grilled Aubergine Salad, Chicken Escalope are some of the dishes you must try from here.
A beautiful old-school Portuguese building from which Pepper House Café functions is enough to intrigue anyone who is visiting this place for the first time. The verandah of this building overlooking the harbour has been converted as the dining area of this restaurant. A small but good library is one among the many things that makes this café a different experience altogether. Visitors can flip through its good collection of books while enjoying their food.
Pepper House Café adopted its name from the building it’s located in. This heritage structure at Calvathy Road near Customs Police’s boat jetty was basically a pepper warehouse built by the Portuguese when they had established commercial relationship with Kerala, centuries ago. Very limited parking space is available in front of the restaurant.
The coffee items, especially ‘Cappuccino’, are an all-time favourite among the patrons here. You would indeed love the perfectly made hot ‘Cappuccino’ with rich milky foam swirling on top. Sugar is served separately for the customers to decide on the level of sweetness they would prefer. ‘Alleppey Fish Curry’ is a lunch combo served along with fried rice, beetroot thoran, fresh vegetables, pappadam and nadan meen (fish) curry. ‘Meen (fish) Curry’ has thick but not-so spicy gravy that tastes great with the rice.
‘Grilled Aubergine’ is the item you must try from the spread of salads. Prepared with mozzarella, cherry tomatoes, basil, honey balsamic sauce and brinjal, this dish is a raw mix of all the ingredients served without much cooking. ‘Chicken Escalope’ is a different continental recipe that has a boneless piece of chicken smeared with mozzarella cheese. The dish is served with French fries and pesto sauce.
Only a single side of the spacious heritage building is used for the functioning of the restaurant. The two main halls of the café are also turned into the main arena when Cochin Biennale Art Exhibition takes place once in two years. The interior of the building hasn’t been changed much except for adding a few chairs and tables. The whole courtyard and the opening that faces the Kochi harbour entrance really elate the dining experience at this café.
