There has been a sharp trend in recent years, where people started turning their face away from foreign cuisines to local cuisines in Kerala and the part played by local toddy shops in Kerala in this changing trend has been enormous. Toddy shops concentrating more on giving their customers authentic Kerala cuisine dishes, family friendly nature of toddy shops in recent years, all of this can be sighted as some of the reasons for this trend.
Mapranam Shappu has been one of the pioneers in this area, which turned the masses for toddy shops. Just be at this place during weekend lunch time and you can see the immense popularity this place has among the local populace as well as travelers. This single hall toddy shop is located after Irinjalakuda, on Kodungaloor to Thrissur highway near Rose bar at Mapranam. All the dishes at this restaurant are prepared at the owners house itself and brought to this place and served to their customers after heating it again. This was started by the father of the present owner Joy, who also acts as the head chef at this place. According to him, almost all their dishes apart from fish curries are very dry after repeated heating and changes in taste all throughout the day.
They serve all their dishes in banana leaves to retain the entirety of the Kerala cuisine dishes they serve. Chemeen, Koonthal, Turkey, Attinthala, Thalachore, Meen Thala Curry are some of their weekend special items. They have somewhere around 26 varieties of dishes during their weekends and about a half of that on week days. All the dishes are displayed on the table and don’t shy away to ask for some free sample before you choose your dish. Crab, Duck, Rabbit, Kada Fry, Kallummakarya are some of their regularly available dishes with much demand from this place. This restaurant has just one single dining area and a separate section cordoned off as family dining space. They have pretty good parking space available in front of the restaurant.
They only prepare a limited quantity of dishes, and once they are over, they do not make it again. So they rarely get any leftovers. If you are looking to get some authentic taste of Shappu curries without any added colors or preservatives, then this place will suit you just fine.
