Kumari Banana Chips on Kannur road, directly opposite Paragon restaurant, is nothing less than a legend, when it comes to Banana chips, one of the favourite snacks of Kerala. On Sundays they pull down their shutters by 6 pm, but for all other regular days, they are open from 9 am to 9:30 pm. Various banana products are the speciality item from this shop.
Kumari chips was started some forty years back, by Sreedharan in his wife’s name. A name which became a legend among Banana chips industry with its taste and quality products. This consistency in quality and taste, they have maintained over in years, made this single branch shop, retain their popularity among food lovers in the city.
This place located right opposite the famous Paragon restaurant, beneath the Beach Flyover, at Kannur road on left side of the one way road, has a small parking area available infront of the shop, which is suitable for parking for a short duration of time.
There are many other Kerala special snacks available at this place, although they are most well known for their Banana chips. Slices of raw banana is washed thoroughly in special turmeric solution and deep fried in oil to prepare crispy and fresh banana chips, which has varying price according to the market price of bananas. With a light sweet taste, sweet banana chips are another rare banana chips they offer, which is prepared with ripe banana and a bit of sugar to add to the sweetness. Kozhikodan Halwa from this shop is another delicacy to try.
This shop currently run by the son of the founder, this place still follows the old methods and traditions in chips making and hasn’t gone for any mass production methods. They prepare the chips all throughout the day to ensure fresh chips is available always, except for Sundays, when they don’t prepare chips but they just retail.
You can see the making of chips happening on the side of the shop, which is quite marvelous, a sight by itself. You have to order prior, if you want to take a large quantity of chips, otherwise time will be lost on waiting. Their customer relationship is quite friendly and treats customers with courtesy.
