Overview This restaurant without a name, popularly known among the locals as Kochannan’s Hotel, made a name for itself with varieties of mutton dishes such as Mutton Roast, Mutton Curry, Mutton Biriyani, Liver Roast etc. Open from 10 am to 11 pm, this is located at Karamana Junction, near ICICI Bank’s ATM. The best time to visit this restaurant will be during the afternoon lunch hours.
Started in 1946, a year before the Indian Independence, much about this iconic restaurant still remains just the same. Whether it is the building they use, complete mutton menu or the culinary methods that give the dishes from this place its unique flavor, nothing much has changed about this place since its inception.
If you go to Karamana and look for a restaurant with a dazzling nameplate or a big restaurant building which will fit legacy of a long running restaurant, you might be disappointed as this place still doesn’t have any nameplate. They are run from a small building without any bells and whistles to attract customers.
Popularly known among their regular customers as Kochannan’s Kada, by the name of the founder who started this restaurant, this place is located right at Karamana Junction, near ICICI Bank’s ATM. When you are traveling from Trivandrum city to Neyyattinkara, this restaurant is located right after Karamana Roundabout, on the right side. This place doesn’t have any parking space but you can find parking by the roadside down the road.
From the beginning of this restaurant onwards, they serve only mutton dishes and butcher all the goats they need on their own to ensure the freshness of the mutton they serve. There is butchery right in front of the restaurant where you can even buy fresh mutton. Mutton Roast, Mutton Biriyani, Mutton Curry, Liver Roast, Mutton Brain are some of their specialty dishes they serve. Said to be the most popular dish at this restaurant, Mutton Roast has lip-smacking flavors oozing from the pieces. With a soft taste, this dish will not look polished like the one you will get from a five star hotel but after the first bite, you will not have any time to think further.
Porotta, Idiyappam, and dosa are some of the Kerala cuisine Tiffin dishes you could try with their mutton specialties. During afternoon hours, they also serve Mutton Biriyani and sumptuous meals, which attract most customers. Although this place only has a single small dining area and furnished with ordinary tables and chairs, the whole place is maintained neat and clean. If you are a person who lusts over mutton dishes then missing out this place will be the last thing you want to do.
