A small one room hotel famous for its ‘Chicken Fry’-Baskarettan’s Hotel at Marakandi, Chokli, near Marakandi L.P. School, is known by its owner’s name. Open only during the evening from 4 pm to 11 pm every day except on Sundays, the best time to come here would be for dinner.
No sign board, no neon lights, Baskarettan’s Hotel hardly looks like a restaurant. But its lack lustre look has not hampered its popularity. When you come here you can see the small dining area is always filled up. There will be people waiting on the outside verandah too.
Most of the customers of this restaurant are the locals from nearby places. The hotel is run by Baskaran and his family. Inconsistency of working days is a major problem with this restaurant. It is often closed on days when the owner has to attend afamily function or on anyother such occasions. So, its always better to call and confirm before coming here.
‘Chicken Fry’stands out as the favourite from the minimal menu of this restaurant. Big pieces of chicken are marinated for a long time. It is then deep fried in oil and served hot only on receiving order. The speciality of this dish is the well-cooked tender meat that tears off easily. ‘Kadala with Beef’ is another popular dishof this hotel. Grams roasted and mixed with minced beef makes for a good snack item. This dish is garnished with cucumber, onion and pepper.
‘Tomato Fry’ is the one and only vegetarian item available here. This slightly sour and spicy tasting dish with thick gravy is great to have along with chapathi or parotta. Chopped chilies are used to give that extra spiciness needed for this dish.
